Risk of Rain Streaming Tonight!

The old school action continues with another new game: Risk of Rain. It's a sidescrolling action platformer roguelike. If that sounds like a lot to handle, it is. However the game was on sale this weekend for 3.39 USD, and I picked it up along with about a million other gamers. With all these roguelikes in the mainstream, it's hard to believe people used to gape in awe when I talked to them about NetHack.

Risk of Rain is hard like NetHack, but the UI pains that plague many ASCII games are being washed away in the modern generation of games like TOME, FTL, Binding of Isaac, and Risk of Rain.

The game is awesome. The music kicks ass, the sprites are tiny, and the action is huge. Classes are varied and uniquely fun. You can play as a commando, bandit, engineer, mutant, miner, and 5 other equally cool classes as you battle through hundred of enemies in your quest to survive the horrors of the strange planet. Each class is very different. The bandito relies on trigger-fanning shotgun blasts and nimble dodging while invisble. Acrid the Mutant, however, requires you to get up-close and personal as you stack poison on mobs of mobs.

Want to experience the awesome? Then come check it out tonight on www.twitch.tv/Robot2600 or check out the embedded video at the end of the post.

Risk of Rain is brutally difficult, and the longer your game lasts the more difficult it gets. After 40 minutes of action you reach "HA HA HA HA HA" and "I'm coming for you" difficulties in which all good manners are forgotten. I managed to make it this far last night, and I'm hoping to beat the game tonight. I made it to the last level but couldn't take the heat and died in the kitchen.

On top of all this, you can play with up to 4 people in truly epic co-op. The server-side stuff is a bit complicated (I hosted a game and then my computer decided not to allow a second game despite the fact that I changed no settings in the interim). If you want to play come drop by the twitch channel or post a message here. You could be on (twitch) TV! Wow! You'd be totally famous and popular.

Anyway I'm off to a place where there is a risk of rain in space. For great justice and adventure!

The Binding of Isaac Hi-Res Wallpaper and First Impression Streaming Now

First, enjoy this hi-resolution Binding of Isaac wallpaper. Second, come check out the game itself, a roguelike-Robotron-Zelda hybrid made by Team Meat, the guys who made Super Meat Boy. Basically, I think the idea is that you have to delve into randomly-generated Zelda 1 dungeons to defeat the horror that lurk within.

I've heard a lot about this game and I'm pretty pumped to play it. While I'm typing this up I'm buying it on steam and getting the DLC as well. For 8 dollars I'm sure it's going to be worth it.

I'll probably get some Steam trading cards out of this also...

Check it out now, LIVE at www.twitch.tv/Robot2600

ONIKEN First Impressions Streaming Now!

I just picked up Oniken on Steam and it promises to be a wild ride. Something like a modern 8-Bit Ninja Gaiden. I live for this shit.

Come check it out tonight on twitch.tv/Robot2600

Let's Play Streets of Rage

Streets of Rage is one of the best beat 'em ups ever created. Hell, it's one of the best games ever created and it's a perfect choice for a Let's Play.

I have spent many night playing through Streets of Rage on the Wii VC. I'll never get tired of the killer music and neon-filled city streets.

You can watch the video below, or check it out on youtube.

NES/Dwarf Fortress Streaming Continues! LIVE!

I'm getting damn close to beating Ninja Gaiden and Double Dragon II. The Dwarf Fortress plods along, almost self-sufficient at this point, but the sieges are becoming more aggressive and the greater the wealth of my kingdom, the greater the terrors that will try to take it.

Come check out the twitch feed at www.twitch.tv/Robot2600

Live 1/2 NES-a-thon!

NES-a-thon is typically a term used to describe 24-hour non-stop NES sessions. This has always been a goal of mine. I know that I won't make 24 hours today... but I'm pretty sure I can use today as my practice 1/2 NES-a-thon! (Marathon runners do the half marathon thing... same concept here).

Come check it out in my twitch channel (www.twitch.tv/Robot2600), or just watch it here on 8-Bit City. If you actually go to twitch, however, you can chat, yell at me, curse, and be a general public nuisance. I would obviously go that route, but the choice is yours!

I'm going to start things off with Castlevania 3. If you have a request I'll play at least a few minutes of it. I'm not uptight or elitists like some twitch bcasters either. Unlike some of the bigger streamers, words and "spam" don't bother me and your insane antics will only serve to amuse and delight.

So let's talk about the games a bit. I've never beaten Castlevania 3, although I'm getting better at it every day. Lately I've been playing SMB3, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, and Rygar... so expect those guys to show up over the next 12 hours.

Hopefully, with this practice session I will be able to complete one of my life goals: to play NES for 24 hours, stream it live, and document the entire thing with text as well. I don't have a set date yet, but maybe in a few days? Let's do 12 hours first.

Here is the live stream for today:

NES Streaming Live Tonight

Taking requests for games to play also.

It's live now @ www.twitch.tv/Robot2600

Dwarf Fortress: Back at It

Day 4. The epic adventure continues tonight!

Will goblins take me down? Unlikely? What can stop me? Nothing. Nothing can stop me.

VG Music: Top 70 NES Songs

Found this awesome top 70 list of NES songs on youtube this week. I don't agree 100% with the choices, but it definitely introduced me to like 10 songs I had never heard before! Great list, great listen.

Maybe this explains my recent delusions of beating Castlevania...

Day 3 Streaming Dwarf Fortress Starts Now!

Join the Dwarf Fortress phenomenon. Yesterday I streamed for 12 hours. Today? Who knows!

If I can take out the ghost in the above screenshot, so can yooooooou!

As always there will be awesome 8-Bit music rocking all day.

Defeating the Marsh Titan in Dwarf Fortress

He was no match for 40 dwarfs in iron plate armor. Titans count as Megabeast, if I remember correctly. This was my first Megabeast but I hope to fight more soon. Good exp.

Dwarf Fortress Marsh Titan

"The Marsh Titan Bilalo Mafiirede Amalafidale has come! A great humanoid composed of solid salt. It has a round shell and it moves deliberately. Beware it's deadly spittle!"

Awesome this should be fun.

A Nice Dwarf Forest

Great forest and some lakes. In a few years I'll chop down all these trees, but fear not: they will grow back.

Epic Mead Hall Under Construction

A picture of my half-completed epic dining hall in Dwarf Fortress. Notice the fancy statues. This thing should be able to feed my fortress forever. Zug zug!

This hall will last forever, and so will the twitch streaming!

8 Hours of Micro Mayhem

The Dwarf Fortress non-stop stream continues today! We streamed for 6 hours yesterday and I want to break that record today.

The bridge is down, the food is short, and the drink doesn't exist. Looks like its going to be even more fun than yesterday, so come by my twitch channel and check it out.

I'm going to rock the Dwarf Fortress and the 8-Bit music all day long. 8+ hours of non-stop micro and mayhem.

We are working with over 170 Dwarfs and 8 military squads. I have to tackle to food situation first, and some design flaws are starting to manifest with more dwarfs.

It's gonna be a challenge, but so what?

Twitch.tv/Robot2600

You can watch on 8-Bit City via this plugin. Probably better to go to twitch though!

Dwarf Fortress "There Will Be Ghosts" Episodes 3 - 5

Not going down without a fight. The conclusion to my first Dwarf Fortress video. This was a great fortress with lots of steel, it's too bad I didn't master the art of gearing out 2 squads of Dwarfs earlier. I had the metal.

It was fun making these videos, and I hope to make more Dwarf Fortress episodes very soon.My mic is driving my crazy, I need to get a new one ASAP. At least I can turn it off when I'm not talking. I try not to talk to much.

Real Japanese Version of the Ultima Exodus Song

Ultima Exodus is still the best RPG on the NES, and still has some surprises in store.

This blew my mind. A song which I have loved since I was a kid was actually vocalized for reason which remain mysterious to me. I assume it was for an OST release in Japan.

Great song, awesome version, give it a listen! Thanks to SDC for showing me this.

Streaming Dwarf Fortress All Day

I'm streaming some Dwarf Fortress all day. There are at least 6-7 hours left. Check it out and follow me on twitch!

I'm not using my mic either, just blasting good NES tunes.

The picture is of the outside of my base, to see the 120 Dwarfs trying to work inside, follow the link.

Modding Dwarf Fortress - How to Remove Aquifers

I got tired of generating good worlds ruins by aquifers in Dwarf Fortress so I decided to mod my version to remove them. You can watch the short video tutorial if you want to remove aquifers also!

10 GOTO

DwarfFortress/raw/objects

You just need to replace all instances of "[AQUIFER]" with
"(AQUIFER)" in each of these 3 files.

inorganic_stone_layer.txt
inorganic_stone_mineral.txt
inorganic_stone_soil.txt

Wow, easy and awesome!

Star Quest Wallpaper 1440 x 900

Download this cool Star Quest wallpaper. Star Quest is a free, indie, meta-video game. It is about video games, it contains many games inside of it, and of course, it's also a game itself.

With huge amounts of secrets that I'm pretty sure have never been found, Star Quest has at least 20 hours of gameplay for the first time player. Like Myst, if you know the solutions you could speedrun it much, much faster.

You won't be bogged down with leveling up or experience. You explore the world at your own pace, do things how you want to do them. Your quest is simple enough: stop the Scientist and recover your memory.

You'll need the help of Princess, King, and Lobtron if you are going to succeed.

Also:

-Collect quarters to access the arcade machines.
-Solve the puzzles to unlock more machines.
-Hang out in shady arcades.
-Think about why adventure games are fun
-Talk to 100s of NPCs
-Make ethical decisions
-Explore a huge sci-fi/fantasy world that feels familiar and unique at the same time
-Slowly realize the sinister undertones of the entire planet...

Dwarf Fortress "There Will Be Ghosts" Episode 1

"There Will Be Ghosts" is a 5-part Dwarf Fortress mini-series. Witness the rise and fall of an epic Dwarven Kingdom.

As the title promises, there is at least one ghost in fortress.

Forsaken World Wallpaper Gallery

I found these wallpapers on a Russian website. They are promo art for a free-to-play MMORPG, Forsaken World. I haven't played the game, but they sure know how to make a wallpaper.

You can click each image for a bigger version, or right-click and "save as." Depending upon your browser, google might make the image appear way too big.

I like the baraoque style, reminds me of Soul Calibur. Good stuff.

Let's Play FTL Vanilla

Parts 3-9 of my ongoing FTL Let's Play. These 9 parts are all I'm going to do of Vanilla.

The new expansion comes out Thursday, and I'll be doing a twitch broadcast tomorrow of my first impressions. I'll also record it for youtube if you miss the broadcast.

I'll post when it starts tomorrow, but that will depend on how early we can download the patch.

Until then, why not waste some time?

Let's Play ToME - Part 2

This is the second video in my ToME Let's Play. In this episode, we will explore more of the ruins of Kor'pal. It is a dangerous place indeed.

This roguelike is shaping up to be an epic adventure. Picture sort of related. Not related.

Banners of 8-Bit City 4

Every so often I collect all the banners for the site and post em so that last forever.

Now it's time for round 4. I still have some other banners on my old computer, I'll grab those for the next post in this series.

To me, it's interesting how the style of the banners has changed over the years as I've gotten more into abstract art.

Check out the original set of banners.

Click here for the second banner post.

Finally, banners number 3.
